As a child, it was always a dream of Anthony Rizzo's to be a Major League Baseball player. In 2007, at the age of 17, he was fortunate enough to be drafted right out of High School by the Boston Red Sox organization. He began his big-league journey in Greenville, SC playing single A ball. But, before he knew it, his exciting new world came crashing down with the three words you never expect to hear…"you have cancer". He was shocked to be diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. This was obviously terrible news for him personally, but it was even more grueling for his family because his grandmother was facing her own battle with breast cancer at the very same time. As bad as his chemotherapy treatments made him feel, he knew he had to dig deep and stay strong for everyone around him. During this time, he realized that cancer is so much more than individual hardship, but rather a battle that the whole family must face together. It was a hard road, but on September 2, 2008, his doctor, Izidore Lossos gave him the great news, “Anthony, you are in Remission.” Overcoming adversity like this provided himself with the clarity to know that, in addition to his dreams of major league ball, he now wanted to become a role model to help cancer patients and their families. In 2012, with the help of his family, Rizzo founded The Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation to support pediatric cancer patients and their families.

THROUGH A DIRECT PARTNERSHIP WITH ANTHONY RIZZO, FANATICS AUCTION'S IS DONATING A PORTION OF THIS JERSEY'S FINAL SALE PRICE TO THE "ANTHONY RIZZO FAMILY FOUNDATION".

On May 14th, 2017 the Chicago Cubs faced the St. Louis Cardinals on Mother's Day at Busch Stadium. 2017 marked the second straight year that MLB designed special "Mother's Day" uniforms that replaced the traditional team colors of their uniforms logos and numbers with a pink base. It was during that Mother's Day game that Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo wore the jersey featured in this lot. Rizzo went 0-2 with 2 walks in a 5-0 loss to the Cardinals.

The road grey jersey shows light use with markings on the right shoulder. "CHICAGO" is sewn across the chest in pink and dark grey twill. Rizzo's #44 is sewn on to the front and back of the jersey in pink and grey twill. "RIZZO" is stitched on to the back of the jersey in dark grey beneath a pink vinyl MLB logo stitched on to the back collar. A special pink mother's day ribbon is sewn on to the front left chest of the jersey above the team name. A Majestic Flex Base size “50” tag is applied to the front left tail of the jersey. Rizzo signed and inscribed "GU 2017" on the back number 4 in black marker.

The jersey is MLB Authenticated (JB723748) for its game usage and Fanatics Authenticated for the signature.
